      According to the regulations governing the establishment of the National Health Insurance Committee(NHIC), the responsibilities of the NHIC are as follows:

  1. Review of premiums
  2. Review of the scope of benefits
  3. Coordination of drafting and allocation of annual global budget
  4. Study and interpretation of insurance laws and policies.
  5. Other supervisory functions pertaining to the insurance matters
  6. Other matters stipulated by National Health Insurance Act

      The NHIC is made up of the insured, employers, insurance medical service providers, experts, reputable public figures, and representatives from relevant agencies. Representatives from premium payers should not be less than one-half of the total number of NHIC members, while representatives from the beneficiaries should not be less than one-third. There are thirty-nine members represented by the above mentioned stakeholders. The composition and number of members of NHIC are as follows:

  1. Premium payers: 20 persons
    1. Beneficiaries: 14 persons
    2. Employers: 5 persons
    3. Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics: 1 persons
  2. Insurance medical service providers: 10 persons
  3. Experts, reputable public figures: 7 persons
  4. Representatives from relevant agencies: 2 persons
